What is Communication?


Communication is the process of sharing ideas, thoughts, feelings, or information from

 one person to another so that the message is understood.


In simple words:

👉 Communication means sending and receiving messages.


Elements (Parts) of Communication


Every communication process has these basic elements:


 1.  Sender – The person who sends the message

2.  Message – The idea or information being shared

3.  Encoding – Converting ideas into words, gestures, or symbols

4.  Channel/Medium – The way the message is sent (speech, writing, phone, email, etc.)

5.  Receiver – The person who receives the message

6.  Decoding – Understanding the message

7.  Feedback – The response given by the receiver

8.  Noise – Any disturbance that affects communication (sound, confusion, stress)



Types of Communication

  1.  Verbal Communication

  •   Uses words

  •   Spoken (talking, meetings)

  •   Written (letters, messages, emails)


 2.  Non-Verbal Communication

  •   Without words

  •   Body language, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact


 3.  Visual Communication

  •   Pictures, charts, graphs, posters, symbols



Definitions of Communication


Communication has been defined by different scholars in simple ways 


 1.  Communication is the process of transmitting information, ideas, thoughts, or

 feelings from one person to another.


 2.  According to Wilbur Schramm, communication is the process of sharing meaning

 between the sender and the receiver.

  3.  According to G.G. Brown, communication is the transfer of information from one

 person to another in such a way that it is understood.

Process of Communication


The process of communication refers to the steps involved in sending and receiving a

 message effectively.


Steps in the Communication Process:


 1.  Sender

The person who has an idea or message to communicate.


 2.  Message

The information, thought, or feeling that the sender wants to share.


 3.  Encoding

The process of converting ideas into words, symbols, or gestures.


 4.  Channel (Medium)

The means through which the message is sent, such as speech, writing, telephone, or

 email.

 5.  Receiver

The person who receives the message.


 6.  Decoding

The process by which the receiver understands and interprets the message.


 7.  Feedback

The response given by the receiver to the sender, showing whether the message is

 understood.

 8.  Noise

Any disturbance or barrier that affects communication, such as noise, misunderstanding,

 or emotional stress.

Kinesics


Kinesics is the study of body movements and gestures used in communication. It deals

 with how people communicate messages through facial expressions, posture, gestures,

 and eye movements without using words.


The term kinesics was introduced by Ray L. Birdwhistell.



Definition of Kinesics


  •   According to Ray L. Birdwhistell, kinesics is the study of body motion as a part of non-

verbal communication.


  •   In simple words, kinesics means communication through body language.



Types of Kinesics


1. Facial Expressions

The face clearly shows emotions like happiness, anger, fear, sadness, or surprise.

Example: Smiling shows happiness.


2. Gestures

Movements of hands and arms used to express ideas.

Example: Waving hand to say hello.


3. Posture

The way a person sits, stands, or walks.

Example: Standing straight shows confidence.


4. Eye Contact

Eyes play an important role in communication.

Example: Good eye contact shows interest and attention.


5. Body Movements

Movements of the head, shoulders, or whole body that convey meaning.

Example: Nodding head shows agreement.

Kinesics plays an important role in communication by conveying messages through body

Paralinguistics refers to the non-verbal elements of voice used in communication. It

 includes how something is said rather than what is said. These vocal cues help express

 emotions, attitudes, and emphasis.

 said, not what is said. It includes vocal features like tone of voice, pitch, volume, speed of

 speech, pauses, and silence, which help express emotions, feelings, and attitudes.

In simple words, paralinguistics means communication through voice qualities.

Proxemics is the study of how people use space and distance while communicating. It

 explains how physical distance between individuals affects communication and

 relationships.


The term proxemics was introduced by Edward T. Hall.


Definition of Proxemics


  •   According to Edward T. Hall, proxemics is the study of human use of space in

 communication.


  •   In simple words, proxemics means communication through physical distance and

 personal space.


Types of Proxemic Distance


1.  Intimate Distance (0–18 inches)

Used with close family and loved ones.


2.  Personal Distance (18 inches–4 feet)

Used with friends and relatives.


3. Personal Distance (18 inches–4 feet)

Used in formal settings like offices or classrooms.


4.  Public Distance (12 feet and above)

Used in public speaking and large gatherings.



Importance of Proxemics


  •   Helps maintain comfort in communication

  •   Shows relationship level

  •   Prevents discomfort and misunderstanding

  •   Important in interviews, meetings, and teaching
